 去离子水设备是以离子交换树脂利用氢离子交换阳离子，而以氢氧根离子交换阴离子：以包含磺酸根的苯乙烯和二乙烯苯制成的阳离子交换树脂会以氢离子交换碰到的各种阳离子(例如Na+、Ca2+、Al3+)。同样的，以包含季铵盐的苯乙烯制成的阴离子交换树脂会以氢氧根离子交换碰到的各种阴离子(如Cl-)。从阳离子交换树脂释出的氢离子与从阴离子交换树脂释出的氢氧根离子相结合后生成纯水。
